What is gravure printing?

Gravure printing is a process in which the image areas on the printing cylinder are recessed while the non-image areas are raised; during printing, ink fills the recessed areas, and after a doctor blade removes excess ink from the surface, the ink remaining in the recesses is precisely transferred to the substrate under pressure.
